Quotes from friends, teachers, patrons and myself "You can't tell me there is no mystery. It's everywhere I turn. Moon over junk yard where the snow lies bright can set my heart to burn. Stood before the shaman I saw star strewn space behind the eye holes in his face. Infinity always gives me vertigo and fills me up with grace. I was built on a Friday and you can't fix me. Even so I've done OK. So grab that last bottle full of gasoline. Light a toast to yesterday. And don't tell me there is no mystery. It over flows my cup. This feast of beauty can intoxicate just like the finest wine. So all you stumblers who believe love rules. Come all you stumblers who believe love rules. Stand up and let it shine." -- Bruce Cockburn, "Mystery" "But more than anything else, in these Sacred Spaces, inside and outside of me, I find something that is larger than me, greater than my Self.... A Very Large God." -- Stu "When the flood calls you have no home, you have no walls. In the thunder crash you're a thousand minds, within a flash. Don't be afraid to cry at what you see. The actors gone, there's only you and me. And if we break before the dawn, they'll use up what we used to be. Lord, here comes the flood. We'll say goodbye to flesh and blood. If again the seas are silent in any still alive, it'll be those who gave their island to survive. Drink up, dreamers, you're running dry." -- Peter Gabriel "I mean by a picture, a beautiful romantic dream of something that never was, never will be--in light better than any light that ever shone--in a land no one can define or remember, only desire..." -- Edward Burne-Jones "There is freedom within, there is freedom without. Try to catch the deluge in a paper cup. There's a battle ahead, many battles are lost. But you'll never see the end of the road while you're traveling with me. Hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over. Hey now, hey now, when the world comes in they come, they come to build a wall between us. We know they won't win." -- Neil Finn "We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience." -- Jacquelyn Small "Before we begin our banquet, I would like to say a few words. And here they are: Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! Tweak! Thank you!" -- Albus Dumbledore "To the East, God and Humaness; To the North, Courage and Vulnerability; To the West, Self-Awareness and Forgiveness; and To the South, Feelings and Wisdom. To the Sky and the Earth and All There Is. OK God. Let's Do It." -- Stu "You think I think an artist's job is to speak the Truth. An artist's job is to captivate you for however long we've asked for your attention. If we stumble into Truth, we got lucky. And I don't get to decide what Truth is." -- Tabitha Fortis, "The West Wing" "The map is not the territory." -- Gregory Bateson "I used to talk more about my work, back when my work wasn't as good." -- Stu "The difference between a mystic and a madman is a mystic knows who not to talk to" -- Author Unknown "The strangest thing I've seen is a t-shirt turning green." -- David Crosby "Without art, we are but monkeys with car keys." -- Author Unknown "Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up." -- Pablo Picasso "Most of the time I'm faking it. See, I think there's not much that can be done about most problems. They're too complicated, too deep rooted by the time I hear about them. The most I can do usually is look, listen, real closely, and try to catch some glimpse of the secret life everybody's got. If I can get a sense of that, then maybe just maybe, I can help them out a little." -- "Mumford" "The Circle. The Spiral. Universal symbols from all cultures, representing everything from festive pinwheels to the internal journey of the soul. The Spiral: A movement down into despair, a motion up into joy, a sojourn inward and back out again. The Circle: A path of completion, a new beginning, a continuing sense of union." -- Stu "There are two types of photographers: those who take pictures and those who make pictures." -- Camille Bonzani "Sacred spaces can be anywhere you want them to be. From the sandstone arches of Utah to your favorite greasy spoon. Sure, some places are easier to feel the light in than others, but I believe it has more to do, to what you bring to the space than anything else." -- Stu "Home is where I want to be. Pick me up and turn me round. I feel numb. Burned with a weak heart. I guess I must be having fun. The less we say about it the better. Make it up as we go along. Feet on the ground. Head in the sky. It's OK. I know nothing wrong." -- David Byrne "I know I've grown as an artist when even though I think the damn car is just an O.K. shot, since everyone likes it, I've included it in the show." -- Stu "We all got wheels to take ourselves away. We got telephones to say what we can't say. We all got higher and higher every day. Come on, wheels, take this boy away." -- Gram Parsons "I can teach technique, but I can't teach vision." -- Mike Cindric "When inspiration comes, I hope she finds me working." -- Pablo Picasso "What I really enjoy about night shooting is that I'm not just recording fractions of a second of time, but minutes, and sometimes hours of time on film." -- Stu "When I first saw the cover photo by Tucson based Stu Jenks it clearly captured an atmospheric condition that seems alive in this music. We meet up and soon realized some parallels in our work with the way we capture moments steeped in atmosphere that can never be retraced once its captured on the film or tape. (In this case recordable CD) On a full moon summer night in 1999 Stu made his way over to the Timeroom. With Atmospheric Conditions playing as the background he proceeded to document another moment on film not far from the studio. This is "The Ancestors Circle" on the back panel. -- From Steve Roach's CD "Atmospheric Conditions" "Stu's dedication to his art is only exceeded by his creativity, intuition, and love." -- Pat Canterbury "Your work is rippling out and touching the many strands, and the many hearts that sit like jewels within the strands." -- Frank MacEowen "I've loved many men, but Stu's the only one I liked." -- Lisa Coleman "You've been leading me beside strange water. Streams of beautiful lights in the night. But where is my pasture land in these dark valleys? If I loose my grip, will I take flight?" -- Bruce Cockburn "It's sort of like a magic trick. Once you find out how it's done, you're not going to be nearly as impressed" -- Stu "F/5.6, 15-minute time exposure, full moon, Zippo lighter." -- Stu "Do you realize all your photos, except one, are circles? -- Tom Beall "You sepia tone a bad print, and what you get is a bad sepia toned print." -- Linda Cooley "Selenium is weird stuff. What you lost when you left this world, this sweet old world. The breath from your own lips. The touch of fingertips. A sweet and tender kiss. The sound of a midnight train. Wearing someone's ring. Someone calling your name. Somebody so warm cradled in your arm. Didn't you think you were worth anything?" -- Lucinda Williams "And that's my home where dreams are born, and time is never planned. We've got some difficult days ahead. But it doesn't matter with me now. Because I've been to the mountaintop. And I don't mind. Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I'm not concerned about that now. I just want to do God's will. And He's allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I've looked over. And I've seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people will get to the promised land. And I'm happy, tonight. I'm not worried about anything. I'm not fearing any man. I could go at anytime." -- Neil Finn "Much more than this, way beyond imagination. Much more than this, beyond the stars. With my head so full, so full of fractured pictures, and I'm all there right next to you. So much more than this, there is something else there. When all that you had has all gone. And more than this, I'm alone feeling so connected, and I'm all there right next to you. More than this." -- Peter Gabriel
